Brady's torn knee ligament...
November 22, 2008

I'm going out on a limb here - I've seen my favorite baseball pitcher of all time struggle with torn knee ligaments - Jim Lonborg.  And there was no prior indication that his leg would set him back.  It might just be a gut feeling, but when Brady was photographed, right before the Super Bowl, hobbling around with some kind of elaborate foot brace, I had to think he had a problem - if nothing else - it could be a sprain - but I think worst-case-scenario - and I believed then, and I still believe, that it was a precursor to his knee injury.

Somehow, I wasn't surprised that there were complications with Brady's knee surgery, because, at 6-4, and as sturdy as he is,  I've always thought he was built to be injured.  Don't take that the wrong way - its just a gut feeling I get from watching him in the pocket.  From the knee down, he looks vulnerable.

Prepare to receive information that our guy may not be coming back.  Lonborg was Cy Young one year and inop the next.  I hope this turns out not to be the case, but don't be surprised if it comes true.

In the case Brady does not return, there could be no better substitute than Matt Cassel.  If I were Bill Belechik, I would firm his position by signing the best young quarterback, as a backup, that is available on the planet.  Then I would sign a linebacker to platoon as a running back - I only say that because, at 280, Brandon Jacobs of the Giants appears to be able to do what he wants - and it could come down to a Patriots/Giants rematch.  Either that, or a mobile 300 pound defensive lineman.

Whatever happens, its really a lot of fun to watch this team, with all of its setbacks, play world-class football.  Brett Favre probably should have kept his mouth shut after last Thursday's squeaker.  It'll come back to haunt him.

Don't forget that Jim Lonborg's injury was 40 years ago. Medical technology has improved immensely since then, and there's every reason to believe that Brady will come back strong. Of course he'll have to wear a brace which will cut down on his mobility but he never really ran well anyway. Cassell is a much better runner than Brady. The big difference between the two is that Brady sees the field better than Cassell and can find the open receiver, though Cassell has shown marked improvement since the beginning of the season. If you had to choose between the two, who would you choose? ...View More

I agree - Brady sees the field better. That's critical. I would rather have him in - but that's not possible. My concern is that the Patriots have the best possible backup for Cassel, in the case that he is injured. I know little or nothing about Guttierez. If he's the athlete that Cassel is, then no prob. I just would not sit back, at this point, if I were director of pp, and go with the flow. I would be doing some serious war-gaming. ...View More
